Welcome to my website. My name is Emily and I am a qualified Humanistic Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, which means I am a “talking therapist” and am here to listen. This website aims to offer some information about counselling and a little bit more about myself to help you find out if they way I work is right for you.
How I work- I have chosen to follow a humanistic approach to counselling. This is the theory I base my practice upon, within this I undertake an existential phenomenological philosophical . My approach is based upon exploring how you are experiencing a problem and further exploring this together, with the aim of discovering the meaning you are making from what is going on and further exploring where this came from. I often reflect on and share my experience of hearing your story with you.
What areas I specialise in- I often get asked if there is an area of counselling I specialise in. I believe that everyone experiences problems differently and am interested in hearing what it is like for you. Therefore I would like to think that I work with people not problems. Having said that, my training has provided me with an understanding of multiple issues that may arise in counselling. I have a special interest in working with those who experience long term chronic pain.
Getting in touch- You can get in contact with me by phone, text or e-mail. I will aim to respond within 24 hours. I welcome having a short chat on the phone if you have worries about coming along to counselling.
What to expect in your first appointment- The first appointment is an opportunity to meet each other, to see if we would like to work together. I will aim to ask you some questions in this session and establish what you would like to get out of counselling. It is an opportunity to ask me some questions too.
What to expect from me- I feel counselling works best when we work together. You can expect me to listen and together we can further explore what has brought you to counselling. My aim is to explore the meaning you make from your concerns. I believe that although we cannot change what happened in the past, we can explore the meaning you are making of that today.
What I expect from you- Counselling is most beneficial when we see each other on a weekly basis, so therefore I would ask for a commitment from you to attend for weekly sessions. I offer both long and short term therapy- this varies on a case by case basis. I would suggest that we start off by working together for a minimum of 8 sessions. Alternatively I offer "open ended" therapy. Endings are very important within counselling. I would expect for us to work towards an ending in both long and short term work.
My availability- I have appointments available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. I can offer evening appointments if necessary. I can sometimes fit in appointments outside of these times, depending on my schedule.
