Welcome to my website. My name is Emily and I am a qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. This website aims to offer some information about counselling and a little bit more about myself to help you find out if they way I work is right for you. If you have any questions, please do get in touch.

How I work

To put it simply, I listen. Really listen, hear you and reflect my experience of listening to you. There are lots of reasons for coming to see a counsellor or psychotherapist. Every client is different, so I aim to adapt the way I work to each client. The thing that doesn’t change is creating a space which facilitates listening and really being heard and held. My approach is based upon exploring how you are experiencing a problem and further exploring this together, particularly focusing on emotions. Sometimes I will use metaphor to explore difficult emotions safely.

What areas I specialise in-

I have a particular interest in working with clients who are experiencing anxiety and depression following a traumatic event in someones life. In particular I have an interest in exploring the link between mind and body, within which I aim to help the expression of the physical elements of anxiety and depression, which can be difficult to find the right words for.

My further training and experience has given me a wide insight into varying complex mental health issues and diagnoses such as PTSD, anxiety disorders, personality disorders plus many more.

Initial meeting appointment-

Before agreeing to work together, we can meet together, so we can discuss what brings you to therapy and what you’d like to achieve, which lasts for approximately 30 minutes. It is also a chance for you to ask me some questions. This gives us both an opportunity to see if we work well together. There is no obligation to continue coming after this appointment. Choosing a therapist is a big decision, as the research suggests that the most important factor in counselling or psychotherapy being affective is the relationship between client and therapist.

On-going appointments-

What to expect from me- Counselling works best when we work together. You can expect me to listen and together we can further explore what has brought you to counselling. My aim is to explore the meaning you make from your concerns. I believe that although we cannot change what happened in the past, we can explore the meaning you are making of that today.

What I expect from you- Counselling is most beneficial when we see each other on a weekly basis, so therefore I would ask for a commitment from you to attend for weekly sessions. I offer both long and short term therapy- this varies on a case by case basis. I would suggest that we start off by working together for a minimum of 8 sessions. Alternatively I offer "open ended" therapy. Endings are very important within counselling, so I would expect us to work towards ending.
